The Lone Star College Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program has been approved by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The accreditation process examined the LSC RN to BSN program from developing and teaching its curriculum to its working with nursing students.
“Lone Star College provided the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing with data to determine whether our program meets their strict standards,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “They also looked at student progress in completing degrees and the percentage of students who finish.”
LSC recently held its first BSN graduation ceremony, conferring 24 bachelor of nursing degrees. “As nurses, we are in an ever-changing health care arena,” said Billy Ledesma, LSC BSN graduate who spoke at the graduation and pinning ceremony. “Being a nurse shapes our professional identity. Our way of thinking about nursing has and continues to evolve and mature with our education and career.”
Accreditation with ACEN is voluntary but offers students many advantages including additional financial aid opportunities, ease of credit hour transfer and greater access to graduate programs.
“This accreditation ensures that instructors are using appropriate teaching methods, that courses have the proper content and that Lone Star College is meeting the needs of nursing students,” said Head.
LSC was approved by the state of Texas and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to offer the BSN degree to help address the critical shortage of nurses in the greater Houston region. The Texas Legislature also approved LSC to offer a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cybersecurity degree and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy, Manufacturing and Trades Management degree.
