We're celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by getting to know LSC-University Park Math Professor Ivan Ramos Medina.
1. What does National Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
The National Hispanic Heritage month is very important for the Hispanic community. It means recognition for the rich elements and skills characteristics of the flavor of the Hispanic people; It means the inclusion of our culture inside the American culture; It means acceptance of our contribution to the wellness of this country. It means interest in the diversity represented by all the Hispanic countries, and it means respect for each individual's personality.
2. Why is it important that we celebrate Hispanic culture?
It is essential to celebrate the Hispanic culture because it promotes a feeling of belonging and acceptance. You feel part of the American culture. You feel welcome, and you have a voice.
3. Does your heritage allow you to bring a different perspective to your classes, campus activities or academic work?
My heritage brings me the opportunity to present a different perspective in my classes because of my background, personality, energy, body language, facial expressions, experiences, Spanish language, and accent. I can connect very quickly with the Hispanic students because I identify myself with their feelings and emotions.
4. What challenges have you overcome as a Hispanic?
The first challenge to overcome was the language barrier. The first year trying to speak in English was horrible. My brain was tired and overwhelmed. The worst part was to face the mocks and laughs based on your weak English language. Another challenge that I'm still working with is the rejection from other groups of the Hispanic culture.
5. “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope” is this year’s HHM theme.
This theme means to me exactly that: Esperanza. The Hispanic people want to be respected and accepted. The Hispanic people desire to be happy and enjoy the freedom provided by this free country. The Hispanic people want to be successful and have the same rights as the American people. The voice of the Hispanic minorities wants to receive respect and equality.
6. What is your “six-word story” in relation to your Hispanic heritage?
“Proud to represent the Hispanic Diversity.”
