LSC-North Harris is full of students pursuing their academic goals and finding the balance between school and work. It’s not uncommon to find employees who meet those criteria and thrive in their position.
Jannine Jack, public relations specialist, has taken that challenge head-on for nearly two years. Each semester she seems to up the ante, adding a new responsibility to an already growing to-do list.
Jack plays an important role working with the campus organizations overseeing event scheduling and planning.
However, it does not stop there. Jack's commitment to the college goes beyond her the duties of her job. This semester, Jack joined the Professional and Support Staff Association (PSSA) as the new vice-president.
Even though she began working for Lone Star College in 2019, Jack's time with the college goes back to when she was a student.
It’s been a constant pursuit of higher education ever since Jack enrolled at Lone Star College-University Park in 2014, becoming the first member of her family to attend college.
“During my transition into college from high school, I was a bit intimidated and uncomfortable since I was the first in my family to go to college,” said Jack. “However, I managed to persevere by repeatedly reminding myself that it would all be worth it in the end.”
Coming from a family of six, it’s not a milestone Jack takes lightly. Her driving factor still rings clear in her memory.
“I think the most impactful event that stood out to me was going to work with my dad when I was in high school,” Jack recalls. “His job was extremely labor-intensive, and he would always tell me, ‘Make sure you go to school, so you do not end up at a job like mine.' His words constantly repeat in my head, and I believe that is why I am so determined and committed to continue my education.”
Jack’s perseverance carried her to the University of Houston-Downtown, where she received her BBA in Management and MBA in Human Resources Management.
Even while working at LSC-North Harris, Jack hasn’t reached the end of her academic journey. Currently, she is pursuing a doctorate in Developmental Education Administration at Sam Houston State University.
Balancing a packed schedule with a full-time job and doctoral program would seem like the tipping point for most. But for Jack, those long nights after work filled with homework still must find time to fit in her true passion – baking.
Over the past year, Jack began baking outside of work and sharing her tasty talent with a growing number of people she meets through her hobby.
“Honestly, my paper planner is how I get through life,” said Jack. “The balance between everything I have going on in a single week can be a lot to handle, but I love everything I’m doing and have a purpose for each challenge I’m taking on in my life.”
Work. School. Baking. Repeat.
Despite the sleepless nights, Jack is ready to go each morning when she pulls into the parking lot at LSC-North Harris. No matter the task, her perseverance drives her towards the next challenge.
