Mark the calendar for Oct. 4 and Oct. 12 to join this semester’s diversity conversations featuring journalists Russell Contreras and Fernando Espuelas, respectively.
As part of Lone Star College-CyFair's Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, these events are co-sponsored by the Lone Star College Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and by the LSC-CyFair Diversity Committee.
“With a primary goal of promoting awareness surrounding issues pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion, our committee is excited to host these Fall events for the students, staff, and faculty at Lone Star College as well as for the general public,” said LSC-CyFair Diversity Committee Chair Dr. Jennifer Jenkins. “We enjoyed some spirited, interactive discussions with last year’s guest speakers and we are excited to have Mr. Contreras, who was an LSC-North Harris student back in 1993, return as our first speaker in this year’s series.”
The upcoming noon WebEx conversation with Contreras, who covers race, ethnicity, immigration, politics, Latino issues, and the American Southwest as the Race and Justice reporter for the new website Axios, is titled " How Community Colleges Create a Lifeline for Students of Color.”
Prior to Axios where he is also co-author of its newsletter, Contreras was a member of the Race and Ethnicity Team for The Associated Press and worked as a reporter for the Boston Globe. A descendant of Mexican American civil rights leaders in Houston, he's currently working on a book about President John F. Kennedy’s last meeting with Mexican Americans.
The 11 a.m. WebEx conversation with Espuelas, who is also a media and tech entrepreneur, CEO, political strategist and host and producer “The Fernando Espuelas Show” and “Destino 2020 con Fernando Espuelas” on Univision, is titled “Strategic Centrality of Latinos to the Future of the United States - and Our Corresponding Responsibility to the Nation.”
Espuelas is also a Latin American Internet industry pioneer having founded StarMedia Network, Inc., which is renowned for product innovations like the first free email service, instant messaging system, online TV network with CBS News, and other breakthrough mobile and broadband Internet service impacting millions. He’s won numerous awards such as being named one of the “Leaders of the Millennium” by CNN and Time as well as a recipient of Latin Trade Magazine's Bravo Award for Internet CEO of the Year.
