HOUSTON – Lone Star College-University Park celebrated the graduation of a record number of students in the college's eight-year history. The college recognized 1,128 graduates for completing their degrees or certificates during its virtual Commencement Ceremony held Friday, May 14, via Facebook Live.
Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, LSC-University Park has found innovative ways to commemorate graduates and serve the community's education needs meaningfully. 231 graduates shared images and messages of thanks to personalize their graduation experience as they virtually walked across the commencement stage.
The celebration featured pre-recorded, uplifting messages from LSC Chancellor Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC-University Park President Shah Ardalan, Ed.D., and addresses from college executive leadership and distinguished faculty. Marilyn Rubio, president of the Student Government Association at LSC-University Park, delivered the student body address. The LSC-University Park Concert Choir provided a composite recording of choir members performing the “Star-Spangled Banner” from home. In addition, congratulatory remarks from leaders at Texas State University, University of Houston, and Spring ISD were highlighted in the ceremony. LSC Board of Trustees Chair Myriam Saldívar conferred degrees and certificates to graduates.
"This has been an extraordinary journey and accomplishment for our graduates, especially amid an unprecedented global pandemic," said Ardalan. "This speaks volumes to the resilience and determination of our students, as well as the hard work, commitment, and compassion of our faculty, staff and administrators who stayed focused and dedicated to our mission. I am confident that our graduates will continue to thrive and be successful whether they are transferring to a university or pursuing their career ambitions. Congratulations to our Class of 2021 graduates!"
Ashley Guevara, an LSC-University Park 2021 graduate, shared that, even though most graduates wished for a traditional, in-person commencement ceremony, she has continued to feel connected and appreciates the college's efforts to make the ceremony interactive.
"The college went to great lengths to make the virtual event memorable, and I'm grateful I was able to connect with fellow graduates, faculty and staff, and enjoy it with my family," said Guevara. "LSC-University Park is the best decision I made for my educational pursuits. As a first-generation college student, the support, instruction, and encouragement I have received at LSC-University Park have made a positive impact on me and provided me with opportunities just as much as a university could."
Guevara plans to continue her education, earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and pursue a career in higher education.
More than 500 viewers tuned in Friday to the commencement ceremony premiere on LSC-University Park's Facebook page and a separate YouTube broadcast. The college opted to use Facebook Live as the platform for the commencement premiere following last year’s successful virtual graduation celebration.
Following the ceremony, graduates who submitted photos, videos, or messages for the virtual announcement of graduates could download personalized keepsake videos to share with family and friends. LSC-University Park will continue the celebration of graduates with a drive-thru event the week of June 7. Graduates will have the opportunity to pick up keepsake items, including diploma covers, yard signs, swag bags and commencement programs. Faculty and staff will be present during the event to cheer them on.
