CYPRESS, Texas (Dec. 14, 2020) Lone Star College-CyFair’s National Society of Leadership and Success Chapter President Erika Guerra recently was named recipient of a $1,000 scholarship chosen from nearly 500 participants at the fall NSLS summit.
“Winning this scholarship was a great moment for me and my family,” said Guerra, who is balancing being a full-time wife and mother of two, working and going to school. “Lone Star College has truly changed the course of my future. And I hope to leave a legacy here at LSC-Fair, so when my children come here, they will see you can be anything you put your mind to doing.”
Guerra began her education journey toward a new career path in 2014. After being a Registered Massage Therapist for more than a decade, she was ready for a change. Early on there was a family tragedy and thoughts of giving up on her new dream. Driven to finish what she started, Guerra built up enough courage to get involved in campus activities, becoming a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Student Government Association (she is executive vice president this fall) and the NSLS.
In 2019, she graduated LSC-CyFair with an Associate Degree in Business Administration Business Management. However, she was not done. This fall she is earning a workforce certificate in Geographical Information Systems with plans to find a job with companies like ConocoPhillips or the Harris County Flood Control District.
“My participation in NSLS is crucial to the development of not just me, but the hundreds (275 new enrollees in LSC-CyFair's chapter this fall) of members who are also gaining skills to include on their resume for use in future careers and in building confidence in their leadership abilities,” said Guerra, holder of NSLS’s Advanced Leadership Certificate and in pursuit of the program’s Executive Certification.
This leadership program is designed to help students develop skills to become good leaders; critical thinkers, collaborators and impactful citizens while developing confidence, personal growth, and self-awareness. The NSLS mission statement is: Building Leaders Who Make a Better World.
“This scholarship is a wonderful acknowledgement of Erika’s achievements and determination to reach her academic goals,” said LSC-CyFair President Dr. Seelpa Keshvala. "Her initiative to improve leadership skills through participation in several student organizations will serve her well in her future career.”
Only in the chapter’s second year, LSC-Fair is already ranked among the top 100 chapters nationwide, which are primarily 4-year institutions. Five scholarships are available to cover costs of interested new students. For information on LSC-CyFair’s NSLS chapter, email Margit.Beasley@LoneStar.edu.
