Lone Star College-Kingwood students who have demonstrated academic achievement and success were awarded scholarships from the Linda Stegall Excellence in Education Endowment. The 25 recipients, who received $3,500 to continue their second year of study at LSC, were acknowledged during a virtual 2020 Student Recognition Celebration.
“You are all examples of what it means to carry on in the face of adversity and remain persistent in achieving your goals,” said Dr. Linda Steagall, former LSC-Kingwood president and namesake of the scholarship. “I want you to know how much I enjoy receiving and reading your letters each year.”
The scholarship was established to annually recognize the academic achievements of 25 of the top students at LSC-Kingwood in perpetuity. The endowment affords those students an opportunity to complete their second year and earn their associate degree without any financial constraints.
“During my time at LSC-Kingwood, I was a full-time student and juggling two jobs,” said Raymond Craft, LSC graduate and former scholarship recipient. “When I received this scholarship, it helped lighten my load and really allowed me to hone in on my studies.”
This annual scholarship is made possible by an anonymous donor who contributed a $1 million gift in April 2008 to Lone Star College Foundation in the name of Dr. Stegall, former president of LSC-Kingwood, in honor of her service and passion for higher education.
“Thanks to Dr. Stegall’s vision, Lone Star College-Kingwood has become a tremendous resource to the greater Kingwood area for both the students and the local employers who need to hire talented and prepared employees,” said the anonymous donor of the award’s namesake. “Dr. Stegall made such a difference for our community and we wanted to honor her with this scholarship program.”
A second gift from the same anonymous donor in 2012 has made this scholarship the largest endowment LSC-Foundation manages. To date, this legacy has helped over 277 LSC students and will continue to honor the academic success of high-achieving students in perpetuity.
“We did not want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge the students and the donors who make scholarships like this possible,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director. “This scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. Stegall and the tremendous impact she has had.”
