The U.S. Dept. of Education awarded Lone Star College-Montgomery a $2,755,667 Title V grant to help underserved Hispanic students in the greater Conroe area. The money will go toward expanding outreach activities to encourage interest in higher education.

“Lone Star College has identified significant higher education barriers to the residents living in the Conroe area,” said Rebecca Riley, Ed.D., LSC-Montgomery president. “This grant will go a long way in helping them advance their education and ultimately create a better life for them and their families.”

Conroe has been named one of The 15 Fastest-Growing Large Cities by the U.S. Census Bureau. Its population has grown 39.3% from April 1, 2010, to July 1, 2019.

“We will be establishing a Maverick Outpost near public transportation in the greater Conroe area to serve as a one-stop shop for students interested in Lone Star College,” said Michael Krall, LSC-Montgomery special assistant to the president. “This new location will offer outreach activities to encourage interest in higher education as well as assist first-generation college students in navigating college.”

Programs will be based at the Maverick Outpost, thus reducing the geographic and psychological distance between the Conroe area and the main college campus. The LSC-Montgomery school mascot is “Monty The Maverick”.

Title V grants assist Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the attainment of, Hispanic students. These grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance their academic offerings, program quality and institutional stability. The grant awarded LSC-Montgomery begins Oct. 1, 2020, and runs through Sept. 30, 2025.

LSC-Montgomery will use this grant to increase enrollment and improve persistence rates among the underserved areas in the greater Conroe area, especially among Hispanic students.
