This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, which secured American women’s constitutional right to vote, and the launch of Lone Star College-CyFair’s new book club commemorating the women’s suffrage centennial.?
All are welcome to join LSC-CyFair librarians and faculty who are collaborating on the Suffrage Centennial Book Club (#SuffrageCentennialCYF) for monthly, lively WebEx conversations July through December.
“The book club reading list was selected to illustrate the diversity of the women’s suffrage movement and discuss its complicated timeline; to draw awareness to current voting rights issues; and to highlight the importance of civic engagement,” said Regina Vitolo, reference librarian and assistant professor.
The inaugural book club starts with a discussion of “The Woman's Hour” by Elaine Weiss at the 1 p.m. July 28 WebEx discussion with facilitator and LSC-CyFair history professor, Robert O’Brien.
This book is an inspiring story that follows a handful of remarkable women activists fighting for the right to vote, illustrating one of the great 20th-century battles for civil rights. The Woman’s Hour was the inspiration for the American Experience PBS documentary “The Vote” now available to stream for free on the PBS app, said Vitolo.
The new book club’s virtual discussions are set for Aug. 20, Sept. 22, Oct. 27, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15. Email Regina.E.Vitolo@LoneStar to register for the online book club.?
