Lone Star College-CyFair Dual Credit and Honors College student Andrew Jack Roehr graduated as a Coca-Cola Scholar, one of two in this region and of 150 recipients nationwide.
Receiving this prestigious $20,000 scholarship, which is an extremely competitive award given to 1/6th of 1% of 93,075 applicants, Roehr will continue his education this fall studying computer science and business at Texas A&M University in pursuit of a cybersecurity career.
“I plan to found a successful cybersecurity start-up” said Roehr. “As the entire world and its data move online, there’s a rapidly-growing need for security solutions in the consumer, business and public-sector markets. I believe entering this field will allow me to be successful and make a positive impact on the world.”
Roehr chose to take summer computer science courses at LSC-CyFair as a high-quality affordable option to take classes beyond those of a traditional high school, but also to validate his work as a home-schooler. Furthermore, he completed an honors research project on the security of a consumer WiFi router under the direction of Dr. Nina Javaher, computer science professor.
Dr. Javaher described Roehr as a student of highest caliber, bright, insightful, articulate, well respected by his peers and a dedicated team player.
“He has a prodigious ability to seamlessly intertwine theoretical with practical ideas in real-world applications. Overall, he is a wonderful student, natural student leader and a passionate scholar,” she said.
With the dual credit and honors work at LSC-CyFair, Roehr said he received early exposure to and preparation for college-level work as well as course credit enabling him to finish his degree at A&M faster.
“Having taken classes and gained hands-on research experience in my chosen field of study gives me confidence in my major, something which many students going into college don’t have,” he said. “It also gives me confidence I can handle the increased rigor of college-level classes as compared to high school.”
In addition to his academic success, Roehr competed in CyberPatriot, a cybersecurity competition sponsored by the Air Force Association. His team, the DataCowboys, placed first in Texas this past competition season.
