The North Harris College Library held a reception for Paulette and Wayne Norman of the McKay Foundation on April 17 to acknowledge a grant received by the library to enhance the Library’s Children’s area and the Library’s Children’s collection. Maryann Readal, NHC library director, thanked the Normans for the grant, which will allow the library to purchase at least 100 additional books for the collection. Book selections will focus on classic children’s books and books that support the curriculum of the college’s Child Development Lab School.
The McKay Foundation was established after the 1995 tragic abduction and death of McKay Everett, the only son of Paulette Norman. The Foundation is dedicated to the education of children to be safe around people. Paulette Norman, a former teacher, has written a safety curriculum for children, has spoken at conferences, written a powerful book “Waltzing with Insanity,” and has been a part of many local, state and national children’s safety initiatives. The Foundation Web site is http://www.protectingchildren.org. Norman’s curriculum has been adopted by several area school districts and she plans to extend the curriculum to include pre-K through high school students.
The NHC Library’s Children’s Collection supports the curriculum of the college’s Early Childhood Education and Family Studies Programs and the curriculum of the Child Development Lab School. Children of the Lab School visit the library regularly to have Story Time with the college librarians and to check out books from the collection.
Since the partnership between the North Harris Montgomery Community College District (Lone Star College System) college libraries and the Harris County and Montgomery County Public Libraries, residents of these counties may request the children’s books from the Library’s collection by using the NHC Library’s online catalog at http://nhclibrary.lonestar.edu . Additionally, all of the NHMCCD colleges’ libraries are open to the public and residents desiring to use the library services do not have to be registered students.
