Moumen Soudan was just a senior in high school when tragedy struck his family. Soudan’s father was involved in a horrendous automobile accident, which left him critically ill, the family without insurance and hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. At 17, Soudan moved from being a high school senior to major caregiver for his father. Faced with these circumstances while trying to balance his college studies as Biology major at North Harris College, Soudan was chosen as the 2007 recipient of a $1,000 Judy Taylor Scholarship.

This unique scholarship provides financial assistance to a deserving student who is dealing with a catastrophic medical situation while pursuing an education at North Harris College. Funds for the award come from the Judy Taylor Endowed Scholarship account created in honor of NHC’s Dean Judy Taylor. Dean Taylor has been courageously battling metastatic melanoma cancer for approximately five years, while continuing to teach math students and direct NHC’s mathematics, engineering and natural sciences division. This year’s award was possible due to the $15,000 in endowment monies, which produces a $1,000 scholarship each and every year for perpetuity. Approximately two years ago, college friends, faculty, staff and students, hosted numerous fundraisers and sponsored the scholarship fund as a tribute to Dean Taylor.
