CONROE (September 11, 2019) – Lone Star College-Montgomery is partnering with representatives from criminal justice agencies, institutions, and universities to introduce students to careers and opportunities in the criminal justice system for Crime and Justice Week from Monday, September 23 to Friday, September 27.
Monday, September 23 will kick-off the week with representatives from Sam Houston State University programs for Criminal Justice, Victims Studies, and Homeland Security Studies, University of Houston-Downtown, Stephen F. Austin, and the Criminal Justice Training Center. Students will learn about the different opportunities each program offers and potential career options.
"I enjoyed how many different activities and people there were to talk to. Everyone was so willing to answer the questions I had asked,” said student Ash Lahodny about last year’s event. “At one point the K9 handler showed us a demonstration with her K9 going after a suspect. The suspect was played by the K9's trainer. "
The Houston Police Department, Conroe Police Department, K9 Academy, Geo Group and more will join students on campus Tuesday, September 24 to discuss requirements, expectations, and employment opportunities. Students with a strong background in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math will meet with representatives Wednesday, September 25 to learn about non-traditional careers for STEM degrees within Criminal Justice.
The Lone Star College police officers will be on campus for Pizza with the Police Thursday, September 26 to engage students in discussions regarding safety. Games will be provided for students and officers to play and possibly compete against one another.
To end the week, Deputy Steve Squier will take students on a guided tour of the Criminal Justice Complex in Montgomery County. Students will have the chance to explore the divisions of dispatch, criminal investigations, patrol, and jail.
"I believe that once a student identifies his or her career goals, the steps it takes to achieve those goals become more meaningful,” said Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, Dr. Chapman. “I created Crime and Justice Week to help students find their focus, stay the course, and finish strong at Lone Star College-Montgomery.
