LSC-University Park professor brings unique experience to the Pearl and community

HOUSTON – Lone Star College-University Park art professor Kari Breitigam is celebrating a significant milestone with her exhibition, “In Search of Serenity.” The exhibition is on display through Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts Marilyn Morgan Hillery Community Gallery (Pearl), located only minutes from the college in northwest Houston.

“I’m excited to share my artwork with my students and the community,” said Breitigam. “The Pearl is a great resource for our community. Students aren’t always able to make the trip downtown, where most Houston art events take place. The Pearl brings those experiences to our community. I’m very happy to have my work at a location that is convenient for our students to visit.”

An LSC-University Park faculty member since 2012, Breitigam currently teaches drawing, oil painting, design and art appreciation to students from a wide range of backgrounds. Her passion for bringing the world of art to students is evident as she works each year to organize several student art exhibits at the college and in the community.

“Lone Star College has been an active partner and supporter of the Pearl for several years. Congratulations to Kari on this accomplished showcase.  We look forward to her continued success as an artist and exceptional faculty,” said Dr. Shah Ardalan, LSC-University Park president and member of the museum’s Board of Directors. “Our college is proud to have Professor Breitigam on our team, helping drive student access and success while serving the community. Faculty leaders like Kari are enabling us to provide our diverse students with affordable world-class education every day.”

Breitigam brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the classroom. She has experience in embroidery, weaving, painting, collage, soft sculpture and functional arts. Breitigam launched her namesake accessories line in 2013, creating limited edition designs that explore the use of fiber, metal and dyed textiles. Her current studio work focuses on textile art and painting. “In Search of Serenity” features several works from two different series of fiber pieces. They include eye-catching latch hook wall hangings and creations that Breitigam calls “fiber paintings.”

LSC-University Park’s visual and performing arts offerings are expanding as new students enroll in art, drama and music courses. Registration is currently underway.
