(October 31, 2019) – The Gene Haas Foundation recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to Lone Star College-University Park. The scholarship will benefit students who are enrolled in various stages of the college’s machining program and who are working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in machining technology.

Businessman and entrepreneur Gene Haas is the founder of Oxnard, CA-based Haas Automation, Inc. – one of the nation’s leading builder of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools. He launched the Gene Haas Foundation in 1999 to build skills in the machining industry by providing scholarships for CNC machine technology students and National Incident Management System (NIMS) credentials. Students can use the scholarships for tuition, books, their personal NIMS account, to defer the cost of NIMS credentials, and small personal tools that they are required by the program to purchase.
LSC-University Park’s machining technology operator/programmer certificate and degree programs are designed to prepare graduates for careers in the manufacturing industries. Topics within the programs include blueprint reading, computer-aided manufacturing (CAD CAM), machine shop math, extensive hands-on set up and operating manual lathes and mills, as well as operating and programming CNC machine tools.
“We prepare students to gain jobs in machining by using Haas machines in a challenging and rigorous program,” said Dr. Steven Kahla, dean of instruction at LSC-University Park. “Students that complete the program are highly sought by local industry for the machining skills.”
