LSC-North Harris to host regional speech and debate tournament

The Lone Star Swing Speech and Debate Tournament will be held on Friday, Nov. 8, through Sunday, Nov. 10, at Lone Star College-North Harris, located at 2700 W. W. Thorne Blvd. in Houston.

Colleges and universities from Texas and beyond will compete in speech and debate at this regional tournament to qualify for the American Forensic Association’s national speech and debate tournaments.

The American Forensic Association is a professional organization for the men and women who train American students in the skills of public speaking and study the use of reasoned discourse in public life.

Lone Star College-North Harris will co-host the regional tournament with Lone Star College-University Park. The two colleges will begin the three-day event with check-in and scheduling of competitors on Friday, Nov. 8, in the Academic Building, Room 140.

The competition includes 11 categories of speech and three categories of debate. All parts of the tournament are open to the public and free to attend.

“One of the cool fringe benefits that I love about a college-level tournament like this, is the opportunity it provides to high school students who attend,” said event organizer Wade Hescht, LSC-North Harris Speech Department Chair. “The attendees will see excellent oratorical competition, and it can be very inspiring.”
