How we define success varies with circumstances. Perhaps your definition will change after spending the evening laughing at Lone Star College-CyFair‘s “Barbecue Apocalypse” comedy on stage Nov. 14-24.
Matt Lyle’s original comedy begins with three sets of unlikely friends, due to their unique personalities, getting together for a typical suburban barbecue. Unbeknownst to them, the outside world has been simultaneously experiencing a tragedy on a global scale. On the one-year anniversary of the "apocalypse” the couples – a failed writer and wife who questions lifestyle and career choices, yuppy foodies and the overly toxic man and gorgeous girlfriend - return to the same backyard. However, roles have changed and each individual has adapted to their new world ... some better than others.
“I think we get caught up in the more superficial aspects of our lives rather than seeing the value of what we have and what we bring to the table,” said director and drama professor Deborah Anderson. “Hopefully the audience will look at this show in a funny and irreverent way, but figure out there’s an opportunity to look at our lives and see what’s important.”
While Lyle’s comedy has been performed before, it’s something exciting and new in this area and for LSC-CyFair’s performance line up, Anderson said. The characters are all friends from college who are trying to maintain friendships, so it’s relatable. The show is a chance for students to be a part of something fun and have a good time playing characters that are challenging and unusual.
“As director, I like to play around so I’m giving the students an opportunity to experiment and put their own spin on things. The cast is having a great time bringing their own experiences, personalities and style to it.”
This show is recommended for mature audiences only as this production includes adult language and situations as well as gun play.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, Nov. 14-16 and Nov. 21-23 with 3 p.m. Sunday matinees Nov. 17 and Nov. 24 in the Black Box Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts at 9191 Barker Cypress. Tickets are $10 and are available at LoneStar.edu/boxoffice.
