Family and friends are welcome to learn cool math at the carnival-themed Math Games Day held March 23 at Lone Star College-CyFair.

Designed for children ages 3 to 10, this “carnival of fractions, geometry, measurement, and all things numerical” welcomes more than a hundred children each semester.

“They not only learn new and creative ways for solving math problems, they are in a judgement-free environment and are encouraged to become math nerds,” said LSC-CyFair Math Professor Sharon Stefan.

The event also provides LSC-CyFair’s students an opportunity to gain confidence and experience in teaching mathematics to children while they earn Service Learning credit.

This spring, Stefan’s students will help participants learn about basic operations on numbers, set theory, mappings, two- and three-dimensional geometry, and probability.  Games will include hands-on activities, bingo and board games.

Math Games Day activities will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Conference Center at 9191 Barker Cypress.

Parents/adults must be with their children at all times, but no registration is required for this come-and-go event.  Exit prizes will be given to all participants.
