HOUSTON (November 7, 2018) – Lone Star College-University Park hosted the annual American Heart Association’s (AHA) Northwest Harris County (NWHC) Heart Walk for the fourth consecutive year Saturday, Oct. 27. Thousands participated in the noncompetitive, 5K walk on campus.
The Heart Walk raised funds and awareness to combat heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 leading causes of death in the United States. Funds raised will support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education.
LSC-University Park students, faculty, staff and family members contributed $8,860 to the cause and more than 20 teams represented the college and walked together Saturday.
“The Heart Walk is an excellent opportunity to carry and spread the message of the importance of heart health and wellness,” said Monique Wiltz, chair of the LSC-University Park Heart Walk team. “It’s a wonderful community event that my colleagues and I are proud to support and have on campus.”
Before taking off on the 5k walk through the LSC-University Park campus, participants were invited to take advantage of free CPR demonstrations, health information, screenings, heart-pumping activities and healthy snacks.
The Heart Walk has surpassed its $325,000 goal with more than $327,000 raised. The fundraising total is expected to climb as additional donations are accepted through Jan. 1. Visit the LSC-University Park Heart Walk page at LoneStar.edu/HeartWalk2018.
