Lone Star College-Montgomery Faculty Art Exhibit Highlights On-Campus Talent

“Those who can’t do, teach” maybe how the old saying goes, but it couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to the talented souls who teach at LSC-Montgomery.

For proof, one needn’t look further than this semester’s faculty art show, where instructors have the chance to highlight their exceptional abilities. The show features a variety of mediums, styles, and themes, and is available for students, staff, and even community members to admire and discuss.

Pieces included everything from acrylic on canvas, to cold cast bronze sculptures, to mixed media works.

The artists took questions about their work during the opening reception on September 26th.

Tommy Taylor, an instructor for painting, drawing, color, and 2D classes kicked off the opening reception by reflecting on the value of art education. “The reason learning about art is important isn’t so much that you like everything, but that if you don’t like something, you understand why.”

He introduced the rest of the faculty artists displaying work for this show-- Robby Wood, Lauren Christlieb, Valerie Yaklin-Brown, Robin Griffith, Joan Laughlin, Laura Napier, Linda Woodward, Lenard Brown, Jonathan Read, and Mead McLean-- then encouraged everyone to enjoy the art and provided refreshments.

When asked about the inspiration for his works ‘Green Room’ and ‘Color’, he said he’d describe his work as “spontaneous, and [he] tries to keep it that way.”

Many of the artists found inspiration in familiar topics, while also trying to communicate their experiences and interpretation of the human condition.

Valerie Yaklin-Brown, for example, draws from her exploration of psychology, kintsugi, and the world around her. Her pieces from the installation “Flawed” feature gelatin silver photographs with gold paint on them.

“All the gold is the places I messed up,” she said.

She went on to explain that her work hinges on “taking the flawed parts of our psyche, and saying ‘they’re not so bad’. It’s part of what makes us beautiful, unique human beings, the flawed part.”

The rest of the works display never fail to be beautiful and unique in their own right, while also inspiring viewers to reflect on a wide variety of themes and artistic techniques.

The Fall 2018 Faculty Exhibit was on display in the Mary Matteson-Parish Gallery in Building D from September 24 - October 19, highlighting what those who teach can really do.
