Family and friends are welcome to learn cool math at the fall semester carnival-themed Math Games Day held Oct. 20 at Lone Star College-CyFair.
Designed for children ages 3 to 10, this “carnival of fractions, geometry, measurement, and all things numerical” has grown by leaps and bounds to 130 children over the past five years, said LSC-CyFair Math Professor Sharon Stefan.
College students gain confidence and experience in teaching mathematics to children and earn Service Learning credit. The children who attend get to learn math in a judgement-free environment and are encouraged to become math nerds, Stefan said.
“We find that children come back every year because they enjoy the enthusiasm of our future teachers while learning from these games,” she said. “Parents are always amazed at how much their children can do math and the creative ways the children use to solve problems.”
This year, Stefan’s students will help participants learn about basic operations on numbers, set theory, mappings, two- and three-dimensional geometry, and probability. Games will include hands-on activities, bingo and board games.
Math Games Day activities will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Conference Center at 9191 Barker Cypress.
Parents/adults must be with their children at all times, but no registration is required for this come-and-go event. Exit prizes will be given to all participants.
