LASO hosts Beto O’Rourke during Hispanic Heritage Month

HOUSTON (October 8, 2018) –The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) hosted Congressman and senatorial candidate “Beto” O’Rourke at Lone Star College-North Harris Monday, Oct. 8. O’Rourke was one of several elected officials invited to speak with LASO during Hispanic Heritage Month.

LASO Student President Jose Camacho welcomed a crowd of more than 800 students and community supporters with a call to vote in midterm elections.

“It doesn’t matter what peers or professors say,” Camacho said. “What matters is that you take the initiative, go to the polling place, and pick the politicians and policies that best reflect your ideologies. Our voices and our experiences matter.”

O’Rourke took the stage and echoed Camacho’s call to action. He encouraged the audience of mostly young adults to participate in the voting process no matter their political beliefs. He noted that the first day of early voting is Oct. 22, Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6, and that the voices and votes of young adults matter.

“We are here today because we believe in you,” he said. “We know you are not the leaders of the future, but the leaders of this moment. You will decide this election.”
