More than 1,500 Lone Star College faculty and staff members attended the 2018 LSC Convocation held at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center last week.

“Convocation is an important beginning to the fall 2018 semester,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “Our employees are our most important asset and we want to make sure they understand what the upcoming goals of Lone Star College are and also recognize our achievements from the past year.”

Attendees were treated to several guest speakers including city of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Turner described his quest for education in his early years and the beneficial role education has played in his life. With his characteristic humor, he talked about his mentors from Klein ISD, the University of Houston and Harvard Law School.  He thanked the attendees for the important work they do with LSC students, which in turn makes the community a better place to live, he said.

“In everything you do, do it in such a way to positively impact the lives of others,” said Turner.

Dr. Alton Smith, LSC Board of Trustees chair, and Dr. Ronald Trowbridge, LSC Board of Trustees member, also addressed the audience, sharing their thoughts and vision for the upcoming semester.

Following the opening remarks, Head updated those in attendance on the challenges Lone Star College faced after Hurricane Harvey and how LSC provided over $1.6 million in aid to more than 2,000 students to help them get back on their feet and back in the classroom.

The chancellor also discussed the college’s incredible growth over the past 5-7 years. To help address some of the growth and to help provide trained workers, LSC has plans for new centers of excellence including the LSC-Westway Park Technology Center and the LSC-East Aldine Center.

Head also updated the audience on the progress of LSC-Houston North, which is expected to begin in fall 2019 and deliver high-quality education to an underserved area.

“These new facilities will help keep our region strong and remain competitive,” said Head.

He also announced that – for the second consecutive year – LSC was recognized by The Chronicle for Higher Education as a “Great Colleges To Work For.”

City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke at the 2018 Lone Star College Convocation. Turner told personal stories of the major impact education played in his life and the important part educators at Lone Star College will play in the lives of students.
