After a 45-year career in the corporate world, Thomas Austin picked up his first paint brush in a Lone Star College-CyFair class and now a collection of his abstracts will be on display Sept. 6 – Oct. 4 in the Bosque Gallery.
“It was my great fortune to have as my teacher, the late Laura Fisher,” said Austin. “It was her encouragement, clear direction, and solid teaching that inspired and informed this work.”
Fisher, who passed away last October, began teaching at LSC-CyFair in 2008. She served as the art department chair and professor of painting and drawing from 2012 through 2017. Fisher was also art editor for “The Barker’s Voice: A Journal of Arts and Letters.”
Austin’s abstracts communicate emotions, movement and depth in his “Embryonic Journey” art exhibition. He uses acrylic paint, generally on an analogous palette with complementary highlights. Often times the colors are bold with metallic undertones.
“I try to design pieces that have continuity, but allow for a ‘surprise” or two along the way,” he said.
