The Alpha Alpha Rho (AAP) Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Lone Star College-North Harris held its inaugural Graduation Resource Fair on May 2 at the Student Services Building.
The fair was designed to provide students access to employment and university resources. The fair evolved from the AAP chapter’s 2017- 2018 College Project goal to promote early registration to newly enrolled and returning students, and to help them navigate college through graduation.
More than 350 people attended the event, which hosted 36 different vendors.
The chapter teamed up with the LSC-North Harris CAST Lab to plan the event. Vendors included multiple universities and local businesses, including Aldine and Spring independent school districts, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Communities In Schools, Inc., Nations Lending, and Avatar Home Health Care and Hospice.
Additionally, two Resume Writing Workshops were presented by LSC Librarian David Puller.
Chapter President Riki Treadway said, “It was amazing to see this past year’s work come to life with the success of the resource fair. The number of students, faculty, and staff that came out to the event, helped us out and asked questions was immense.”
Chapter Advisor Laura Dupree was impressed with the inaugural event’s success.
“We are all extremely proud of how the event turned out,” Dupree said. “There is no doubt the students who participated in the execution of the college project, and those who were the recipients, have benefitted significantly from the AAP officer and members’ vision. We owe a debt of gratitude to Kristina Raymond, program manager of the LSC-North Harris Transfer Center, who worked alongside them tirelessly. While it is not about the accolades earned but the growth of our students and how they impact the college and community, co-advisor Lynda Dodgen and I love that the chapter was presented both Texas regional and international awards for their dedication to student success through the implementation of their college project.”
Plans for next year’s graduation resource fair are already underway, and the goal is to increase the number participants and vendors.
