TOMBALL, Texas – According to the National Center for Education Statistics, more than 20 million students are expected to attend American colleges and universities this fall, constituting an increase of about 5.1 million since fall 2000, which is why representatives at LSC-Tomball are inviting anyone interested in attending college to consider registering today.
“Our summer and fall registration is now underway,” said LSC-Tomball President Dr. Lee Ann Nutt. “I encourage current and potential new students to apply and register for classes early.”
Early registration, according to Nutt, ensures the best selection of classes and times as many classes are in high-demand and fill quickly. Advisors are available to assist new students with the registration process.
Summer I classes start June 4; Summer II classes start July 12, and fall classes start on Aug. 27.
Nutt went on to point out that LSC-Tomball has a wide variety of class options, whether one prefers online classes, face-to-face hands-on classes, or a mix of both face-to-face and online classes.
In fact, according to Lone Star College System Analytics & Institutional Reporting (AIR), 71 percent of students attend LSC-Tomball part-time. When it comes to instruction, online or distance learning leads the way with 39 percent of students choosing distance learning; 31 percent select face-to-face instruction with some distance learning, and 30 percent select face-to-face classes only.
“We provide a variety of options for our students,” Nutt stressed, before noting that LSC-Tomball isn’t just open to those living in the local Houston Metro area.
LSC-Tomball has a diverse student population. International students at LSC-Tomball include Mexico, Vietnam, India, El Salvador, Venezuela, and more.
“Right now is a great time to register,” Nutt said. “LSC-Tomball has a great record of success, and now that registration for summer and fall is underway, we’re excited to welcome new and returning students.”
In an effort to increase success for all students enrolled at LSC-Tomball, the institution has implemented two new special programs, the Lone Star College Student Success Institute (SSI), and the Center for Leadership, Academic and Student Success (CLASS).
The newly implemented SSI program is a system-wide initiative that was created based upon a review of completion rates among diverse student populations. Many of the services that SSI provides are based
upon a review of completion data relating to first-time-in-college African American students. However, the services are not limited to this population. All students are welcome to participate in the program.
The second initiative geared toward increasing student success, CLASS, is a result of a five-year, $2 million grant from the Department of Education to expand educational opportunities for Hispanic and other underrepresented student populations.
“LSC-Tomball is working toward increasing Hispanic student enrollment,” said Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, LSC-Tomball president. “Our focus is to decrease the rate at which first time in college students repeat the lowest levels of developmental education courses. We will accomplish this by increasing training opportunities for faculty and staff with strategic engagement involving community leaders.”
