Solving Crimes and Doing Experiments All a Part of April STEM

Children ages 3-12 can become a detective and explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with Lone Star College-CyFair future teachers at four free April programs.

LSC-CyFair Education Department students are partnering with the children’s library April 21 and April 24 to host several fun hands-on learning events in the Conference Center at 9191 Barker Cypress.

STEMtastic events have been a successful collaboration between LSC-CyFair and Harris County Public Library since 2015.

“Our pre-service teachers, the community children, and the parents all enjoy and learn from the experience,” said Shamim Arastu, Professor of Education. “What better way to prepare our teachers in training then to provide them with an opportunity to teach?”

The Saturday STEMtastics Stations sessions, from 10 a.m. – 10:50 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 11:50 a.m., are designed for ages 5-10. Both sessions are limited to 35 participants. Pre-service teachers plan the fun and provide take-home exploration activities for all participants.

STEM WhoDunitThe Saturday STEM Power Hour: Who Dunnit? session, from  12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., is designed for ages 9-12 and is limited to 25 participants. Young forensic scientists will conduct ink, handwriting and fingerprint analysis to investigate and catch a culprit.

The Tuesday STEMtastic Literacy session, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the children’s library at 9191 Barker Cypress, is designed for ages 3-6 and is limited to 20 participants. Pre-Service teachers will read and lead engaging literacy activities.
