HOUSTON – The Student Business Organization (SBO) at Lone Star College-University Park is leading a holiday toy drive through November. Donations will benefit children in need during the holiday season through the Children’s Assessment Center (CAC).
The CAC is a child abuse advocacy center that provides a professional and compassionate approach to the treatment of sexually abused children and their families, and to serve as an advocate for all children in the community.
For Sheryl Jimerson, SBO adviser and associate professor of accounting at LSC-University Park, the toy drive’s mission hits close to home.
“I’ve been involved with the CAC for over 10 years and I am so impressed with the work they do for children in our community,” said Jimerson. “The SBO wanted to give back to a charity that focuses on children and we thought it would be a great opportunity to support the CAC.”
Jimerson, who also serves as a court-appointed child advocate in Houston, said the group hopes to collect the toys by the end of November to ensure children have toys in time for Christmas.
“As the community’s college, LSC-University Park is proud to give back by supporting the CAC and their critical work,” said LSC-University Park President Shah Ardalan. “Through the drive, our SBO students, faculty advisers, and campus family are helping make the holidays brighter for these children.”
LSC-University Park students taking the lead on the campaign are SBO President Aashi Bhalla, Vice President Michelle Gomez, Secretary Anthony D’Souza, and Treasurer Amira Sherif. Faculty co-advisers are Jimerson and Maurica Vickerson.
The SBO is one of more than 20 registered student organizations available to LSC-University Park students. The group serves as a networking outlet for students interested in a career in the business field and provides opportunities for networking, leadership growth, community involvement and education.
