HOUSTON – Lone Star College-University Park hosted the annual American Heart Association’s (AHA) Northwest Harris County (NWHC) Healthy for Good ™ Heart Walk for the third year Saturday, Oct. 21. Thousands participated in the noncompetitive, 5K walk on campus. 

The Heart Walk raised funds and awareness to combat heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 leading causes of death in the United States. Funds raised will support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education.

“LSC-University Park is proud to share our campus with the community to support the AHA,” said LSC-University Park President Shah Ardalan. “I want to thank the AHA for choosing our campus to host this worthy cause, as well as the sponsors, volunteers, and companies that helped make the event a success. We look forward to our continued partnership and to making a positive impact on our community together.”

LSC-University Park students, faculty, staff and family members contributed to the effort with $7,615 raised and more than 240 registered walkers. More than 20 teams represented the college and walked together Saturday. The AHA NWHC Heart Walk has already raised $177,609 toward its $250,000 goal.

“Our family of students, faculty and staff showed that they were better together Saturday,” said Ardalan. “Despite the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Harvey that can still be felt in Houston, our community worked together to make a lasting impact.”

“No matter the circumstances, you can count on the LSC-University Park community to rally together and make great things happen,” said Sony Simon, president of the Professional & Support Staff Association at LSC-University Park. “We are always excited to support the AHA NWHC Heart Walk and Hurricane Harvey could not change that.”

The Heart Walk also provided morning festivities for the whole family with heart-healthy treats, giveaways, heart-pumping activities, medical screenings and advice on heart health, as well as a Kid’s Zone.
