TOMBALL, Texas – Thirty-seven percent of all Lone Star College-Tomball students take distance-learning courses, those are classes taken completely online with no face-to-face component. This is 13 percent higher than the Lone Star College average. That’s why LSC-Tomball is hosting an Online On-Boarding event covering the basics of taking online/hybrid classes.
Event organizer LSC-Tomball Professor Caroline Jamroz said it will be held at 7 p.m., Aug. 30 at the LSC-Tomball main campus, in room North-103.
“Although this event is for students taking online/hybrid classes at Lone Star College-Tomball, it is a face-to-face event to answer questions and help students become familiar with the online environment,” Jamroz said. Understanding that some online students are unable to come to campus, the event will also be available to watch online. Visit Lonestar.edu/Everse-at-Tomball for more information.
LSC-Tomball’s decision to hold the Online On-Boarding event could prove to have perfect timing. According to statistics from the Babson Survey Research Group’s annual survey, the number of students taking online courses grew to 5.8 million nationally, continuing a growth trend that has been consistent for 13 years. More than a quarter of higher education students (28 percent) are enrolled in at least one online course.
“Our event will cover the basics of taking online/hybrid classes and tips for success,” Jamroz said, before adding, “We may discuss how to get in touch with tech support and advisors, where to get tutoring, resources on campus, online resources, and more.”
The overarching goal of the event, according to Jamroz, is to increase success rates in online classes, “so the on-boarding serves as a way to connect our students to physical campuses, helping them to not feel as isolated out there in the online world.”
