In the past five years, Marian Liebling and her husband Scott have generously donated to help numerous Lone Star College-CyFair students pursue their dreams, including six scholarship recipients this fall.
This year’s Didwell-Liebling Opportunity Scholarships award recipients are Qian (Jessica) Chen, Nam Nguyen, Mary Tram Nguyen, Puneet Rajput, Krystal Rios and Leilani Anaylah Spearman.
"It has been a joy for Scott and I to award these scholarships to such hardworking and talented students,” Marian said. “Upon meeting with our scholarship students, we leave them with good feelings that our community’s future is in good hands. Truly they are staying close and will go far."
The Lieblings established the Didwell-Liebling Opportunity Scholarships in 2012 in honor of their parents and family after hearing first hand stories of students’ financial needs. They have since established two memorial scholarships in honor of friends Patrick Morris, a mentor and generous donor and Dr. Jim Brown, a former LSC-CyFair professor.
Mary Tram Nguyen, who aspires to become a nurse practitioner, was awarded the Dr. Jim Brown Memorial Scholarship for her dedication to the diligent pursuit of her studies, Marian said. Mary began in the ESOL program learning to read and write English. Married, raising two young boys and working as a teacher’s aide at a private school, this 4.0 student made the 2016 President’s List.
Two other recipients are also pursuing medical careers. Rajput, a Grace Care Center volunteer and 4.0 biotechnology major, plans to become a doctor. Chen is a 4.0 biology major from a single parent home and she hopes to transfer to the University of Houston’s Optometry Program.
Rios was awarded the Patrick Morris Memorial Scholarship for her dedication to community and civic work, Marian said. A local food bank volunteer, this Honors student plans to major in political science as well as go to law school.
Proud to be the first in his family to attend college, future accountant Nam Nguyen seeks to set a good example for his younger siblings, Marian said.
A sixth scholarship was given this year to Spearman. She is a freshman who will be studying psychology and art in the hopes of becoming an art therapist.
LSC-CyFair offers many scholarship opportunities with varying requirements and award amounts thanks to the generosity of community partners as well as from area individuals, such as the Lieblings. The scholarship application deadline for the 2018 spring semester is Oct. 1, 2017.
