Lone Star College-North Harris will host a Student Success Institute on Wednesday, June 21 at 6 p.m. for both current and prospective college students. This initiative is designed to help bridge achievement gaps for students entering college and increase graduation rates.
According to Dr. Derrick Manns, vice president of enrollment management for LSC-North Harris, “The goals of this initiative are to bridge achievement gaps, especially for African American students, since this demographic has the highest non-completion rates for college.”
Students who participate in this free program will receive admission to the Future Scholar Institute, access to learning communities and mentors, access to the annual Leadership Summit, personalized advising and assistance in transferring from LSC-North Harris to a four-year university.
“All of these resources can alleviate those obstacles that many of our students face in order to reach graduation or transfer,” added Dr. Manns.
“We are looking for students that are self-starters and highly motivated to achieve academic success,” said Raymond Craft, student success initiative coordinator and Lone Star College alumnus. “Approximately 100 students have applied to the program online but, according to Craft, “We are still accepting applications.” Interested students can attend Student Success Initiative Day or apply online at LoneStar.edu/studentsuccessinitiative/students.
During the Student Success Institute, college representatives will be available to assist students with their applications and answer any questions. They will also provide information about summer and fall classes and entrance exam waivers.
The Student Success Initiative event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the college’s Student Services Building, 2700 W.W. Thorne Drive, Houston, 77073. For more information, contact Raymond Craft at Raymond.L.Craft@LoneStar.edu or Cassandra Boyd at Cassandra.D.Boyd@LoneStar.edu.
