Lone Star College receives $780,462 job-training grant

Lone Star College has been awarded $780,462 from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to provide customized training for 347 new and incumbent workers employed at Webber, LLC, Webber Barrier Services LLC and Southern Crushed Concrete workers.

“We are very appreciative of the support of the Texas Workforce Commission and look forward to providing this training,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “We are committed to developing the Houston area workforce which contributes to growing economic prosperity of our community.”

“Lone Star College and Webber are examples of a great partnership,” said Ruth R. Hughs, TWC commissioner. “This grant will facilitate opportunities to improve and strengthen our workforce.”

Webber, LLC, Webber Barrier Services, LLC and Southern Crushed Concrete currently do not have training available for their technical employees. LSC is establishing a baseline training program for all hourly construction employees that will focus on basic technical math and blueprint reading skills for the construction industry. For each occupation, the grant will fund the development and delivery of 120 individuals in heavy equipment operations.

Webber, LLC, headquartered in The Woodlands, employs approximately 1,300 crewmembers and specializes in developing construction solutions. Webber Barrier Services, LLC, a highway and road construction firm, is also based in The Woodlands and provides permanent and temporary concrete traffic barriers. Southern Crushed Concrete provides demolition services and recycled concrete and asphalt for a variety of construction projects.

“Our community continues to experience tremendous growth,” said Head. “Lone Star College will continue to develop programs necessary to help ensure companies have well-trained employees.”

LSC has six new facilities coming online over the next year. They include the LSC-CyFair Instructional Building, scheduled to open spring 2017; the LSC-Construction & Skilled Trades Technology Center, scheduled to open fall 2017; the LSC-Westway Park Technology Center, scheduled to open summer 2018; the LSC-Process Technology Center, scheduled to open fall 2017; the LSC-Center for Science & Innovation, scheduled to open fall 2017; and the LSC-East Aldine Center, scheduled to open spring 2018.
