This summer, Lone Star College-Greenspoint Center and Lone Star College-Victory Center are offering a unique Summer Scholars program to assist high school juniors and seniors within the Aldine Independent School District transition from high school to college. The program is conveniently located at both centers, offering students in the immediate area the flexibility to attend a college campus that is close to home.
During the summer, many high school students are not even thinking about their weekend plans, let alone college plans. Choosing to enroll in a college summer program exposes students to the college environment, testing their abilities and sparking their interests all at the same time.
The eleven-week program will take place June 6 through August 17. Classes will meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
According to Dr. Val Dabney, vice president of LSC-Greenspoint Center and LSC-Victory Center, “The program will provide an additional opportunity for current high school juniors and seniors to explore programs and majors, jump-starting their college career.”
Participants will have the opportunity to attend classes in MATH 0310-Intermediate Algebra or ENGL 0309-Integrated Reading and Writing II and EDUC 1300-Learning Framework –The First-Year Experience. Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn six college credits to add to their future college transcripts.
There is a cost to participate in the program, so students are encouraged to complete the 2016-2017 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or TASFA (Texas Application for State Financial Aid) application to determine qualification for summer financial aid. For more information, visit FAFSA.ed.gov. The application deadline to register for the Summer Scholars program is May 12.
