Lone Star College designated Voter Friendly Campus

Lone Star College was selected as a Voter Friendly Campus by national nonpartisan organizations Campus Vote Project (CVP) and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

“Lone Star College is committed to preparing students to become engaged participants in our democracy,” said Dr. John Theis, LSC Center for Civic Engagement director. “This designation validates our civic mission of connecting students with their communities.”

The initiative held participating institutions accountable for planning and implementing practices that encourage their students to register and vote in the 2016 general election. LSC was one of 83 campuses in 23 states chosen.

LSC created the Engage the Election program that provided tools for students to register to vote, and information about how elections are run and ways of becoming an informed voter. It also provided resources for LSC students to check the validity of claims and facts used by the candidates during the election season.

“Community colleges are uniquely positioned to help shape a different approach to the challenges facing society, including seemingly intractable differences among individuals,” said Theis. “Participating in this project was an extension of the goal of promoting the quality of life in our community.”

Other notable higher education institutions recognized included University of Miami, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Louisville, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, University of Utah and Washington State University.

The mission of the Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster efforts that help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process. LSC was evaluated based on a campus plan about how student voters would be engaged in the fall of 2016.
