Lone Star College-Montgomery flies puppies to new homes

Say bon voyage to approximately 40 puppies boarding a twin engine Cesna to fly to new homes Saturday, March 25 at Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport. The dogs will board the flight from 7 - 8 a.m. This is the fourth year in a row Lone Star College-Montgomery is sponsoring a flight so these dogs can get a second chance at a new life.

Maverick Pets Alive, a student group at LSC-Montgomery, planned a month-long pet food drive and Valentine’s Day sale that raised more than $5,000 to help rescue at-risk dogs from area shelters. The pet food collected supported the volunteers of Operation Pets Alive who took in the dogs on this flight. When some of these puppies went into foster care, they had worms, other parasites and at times infections. It takes a few weeks to get them healthy and ready for takeoff. The flight will transport them to shelters in Massachusetts and New Hampshire that are in need of adoptable pets.

3 Puppies
These three puppies, part of a litter of six, were dropped off at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter March 5 and were taken into foster care the same day by the Operation Pets Alive. They are scheduled to fly to the northeast on a flight sponsored by LSC-Montgomery, Saturday, March 25 at Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport. The dogs will board the flight from 7 - 8 a.m.

“This is not a shelter problem. When our shelter takes in more pets than we have people adopting them, that is a community problem and it has to be solved by the community working together," explained Kevin Sumrall, professor of psychology at LSC-Montgomery and coordinator of the fundraising campaign. "A no-kill community that euthanizes only dogs and cats that are truly incurable is now within our reach. The faculty, staff and students of LSC-Montgomery are doing their part, but we need other organizations and businesses to step up and sponsor flights and pet food drives.”

This Flight for Life is made possible by LSC-Montgomery in connection with Cloud 9 Rescue and the local rescue organization, Operation Pets Alive.
