The holiday season is here, which means finals are near, so Lone Star College-CyFair is helping students combat stress with some therapeutic relaxing events.
In November, the student organization CRU will host several opportunities for students to take a break from studying. There will be a Nov. 10 BBQ Social to enjoy grilled hot dogs and a free concert; a Nov. 15 Thank-A-Prof event for writing a thank you letter to professors and a Nov. 28 Candy Cane Caring event to share a candy cane with classmates during study breaks.
Andrew Hall, operations manager of Follett Bookstore at the Barker Cypress campus, will bring back a day of coloring event Nov. 21.
“We are aware of the growing interest and the therapeutic value of adult coloring,” said Hall. “Students enjoy sitting with friends and relaxing, stress-free, while being creative.”
This event has an optional international theme for students to color flags from around the world followed with the new Caribbean Student Organization’s Taste of the Caribbean Fest. Students can stop by the Conference Center to enjoy some traditional music, dance and food sampling from the various islands.
In December, the Psychology Club will host a Laughing Yoga class Dec. 5 and the Student Life department will provide another coloring day along with a Pet-a-Puppy event set Dec. 8.
Throughout the semester the Student Programming Board held “Hump Days” giving students an hour break from school work and studying to just hangout and socialize.
Other student club de-stressing semester events, especially around mid-terms, included a volleyball tournament, a pizza eating contest, a Hispanic Heritage Feast featuring 52 Latin dishes to sample and a Stress-Free Zone providing several 30-minute sessions to rock out on an indoor cycling bike with instructors from CycleBar Vintage Park.
In addition to these student events, the Academic Success Center provides semester long opportunities to help ease stress in the classroom.
“Using the ASC resources can help eliminate some of your academic stress,” said Rodrick Moore, ASC director. “Don’t wait and procrastinate, be proactive in your studies. Come to tutoring, use the writing center for your papers and attend Exam Jam (Dec. 10) and Exam Cram (Dec. 12) before finals.”
