Lone Star College has been accredited by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) Gateway program for its Oil & Gas Drilling Floorhand-Roustabout program.
LSC is the first community college in the nation to earn this accreditation.
In addition to learning the technical skills needed for land and offshore floorhand/roustabout jobs, IADC’s Gateway™ program ensures workers are prepared for life on a rig, contributing to the safety culture, and for achieving competence faster so that they can move up into higher level positions.
“Lone Star College has an excellent reputation for providing a well-trained workforce,” said Dr. Stephen C. Head, LSC chancellor. “Receiving this accreditation is validation that Lone Star College students have industry-developed, competency-based instruction for the oil and gas industry – with the most up to date and complete training possible.”
LSC students will earn certification for IADC RigPass, WellSharp and Oil & Gas Core Skills, the IADC Gateway certificate – along with a LSC workforce certificate – upon successful completion of the 288-hour Oil & Gas Drilling Floorhand-Roustabout program. To become accredited for this program, LSC was required to pass two audits involving instructors, curriculum and laboratories.
RigPass ensures personnel have met basic requirements defined by safety and training professionals in the drilling industry.WellSharp Basic offers trainees more in-depth knowledge and a greater confidence that they know how to prevent incidents and respond swiftly and appropriately. The IADC Gateway Oil & Gas Core Skills program was created over an one-year period by IADC employer members which includes companies in oil and gas exploration and production, manufacturing, service providers, and other related specialties.
“We all know the oil and gas industry is cyclical,” said Dr. Head. “When oil production picks up, Lone Star College will be ready to provide employers with a well-trained workforce. Our students are being placed in both onshore and offshore companies, as well as with pipe and oilfield manufacturers.”
