“I’m excited to be here,” Chavez said. “With
my background in higher education and my experience as a community college
student, I have the skills needed to pay it forward to make sure LSC-Montgomery
students succeed.”
Joining LSC-Montgomery from Coastal Bend
College in Beeville, TX., Dr. Chavez served as the vice president of student
and administrative services since 2014, and previously at Midland College in
Midland, TX., where he served as dean of enrollment management for four years.
He also held numerous leadership positions
with St. Philip’s College (Alamo Colleges) in San Antonio, TX., Arizona Western
College in Yuma, AZ., Edinboro University in Edinboro, PA., and New Mexico
Junior College in Hobbs, NM.
"Dr. Chavez is uniquely qualified to
serve in this important role for the college," said Dr. Rebecca Riley,
president of LSC-Montgomery. "His focus on student success, his
extensive history in higher education and his experience as a former student in
the community college environment, combined with his passion, energy and
personal values are extremely valuable for our college."
Dr. Chavez attained his educational
doctorate from New Mexico State University and also carries a master’s degree in
counseling and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from College of the Southwest,
as well as his associate’s degree from New Mexico Junior College.
Dr.
Chavez has been through years of higher educational training and has participated
in numerous educational and professional activities pertinent to his new role.
He promises to bring to LSC-Montgomery some
very valuable experience in student and administrative services, along with
outstanding leadership skills in the academic world and in the community.
“As I sit and read the college’s strategic
plan now,” Dr. Chavez said, “I’m charting out how I can utilize my background
to make sure that student services and the instructional side of the college collaborate
to better benefit the students.”
Dr. Chavez is married and has two college-aged children.
