Lone Star College-Montgomery, Conroe Center Offer Free Income Tax Preparation Assistance

In an effort to assist lower-income families with filing their taxes, Lone Star College-Montgomery and Lone Star College-Conroe Center are providing free income tax preparation for community residents.

LSC-Montgomery, through a partnership with Solutions for Communities Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), accounting students and other volunteers trained and certified by the IRS, are helping families prepare and file their 2014 federal income tax returns on Tuesdays, from 4-7 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., in the Library Building (Building F), room 314.

Additionally, LSC-Conroe Center offers tax preparation services through a partnership with AARP Foundation on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12-4 p.m., at LSC-Conroe Center in room CC121.

Tax preparation services at both campuses are available through Tuesday, March 31, with the exception of Saturday, March 7-14, when the college is closed for spring holiday.

LSC-Montgomery has also partnered with United Way and Entergy to offer virtual tax preparation services through the IRS My Free Taxes website, a free and safe online filing tool available for households with an income of $60,000 or less in 2014.

“Between the two locations, and our online partnership, most taxpayers should be able to find an easy and convenient way to file their taxes,” said Madeline Brogan, professor of accounting at LSC-Montgomery.

The college has provided volunteer tax preparation services for several years. Students in the college’s Accounting and Business Club, which promotes the profession and provides resources to interested students, use this as an opportunity for service learning.

Taxpayers will need to provide, or have accessible, specific information for proper preparation. Each assisting entity can be contacted for the documentation needed at the time of preparation.
