Lone Star College has been designated a 2015 Military Friendly® School selected from a nationwide list of more than 10,000 schools by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business connecting the military and civilian worlds. This is the second year in row LSC has been recognized.
The Military Friendly® School list is published each year in G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines, properties of Victory Media. The list features only the top 15 percent of schools nationwide who are recognized for doing the most to support veteran students.
“We are very grateful to the men and women who serve this country,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “We feel it is an honor and a duty to make sure our veterans and their families have the support needed to make the transition from the military to civilian life.”
LSC received high marks for flexibility in scheduling and course completion requirements, credit acceptance as well as spouse and dependent benefits. Each LSC campus has a Veterans Services liaison to help veteran students and eligible dependents with services including a centralized processing center for the certification of education benefits.
LSC partners with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the VetSuccess on Campus program, a collaborative effort to provide a supportive on-campus environment for student veterans.
LSC also participates in the College Credit for Heroes program, launched by Texas Gov. Rick Perry in 2012, which seeks to maximize college credits awarded to active military members and veterans for their military experience. Among other milestones, the program has produced streamlined degree paths and workforce certificates for veterans to expedite their transition into the Texas workforce.
In addition, LSC partners with the Texas Veterans Commission and has an employment representative dedicated to LSC veteran students. LSC also offers career and financial aid counseling, along with a number of student groups for veterans on its campuses.
