Several Lone Star College-CyFair students recently had the opportunity to gain a little business perspective as Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce luncheon attendees.
LSC-CyFair’s Student Outreach And Retention (S.O.A.R.) Leaders Garner Bussell, Carinna Diaz de Leon, Yoan Gallegos, Jacob Garza, James Harney, Diego Lira and Itzel Pescador, along with Enrollment Management’s Daniel Villanueva, Chris Dudley and Daniel Herrera, attended the chamber’s general meeting in May, which featured LSC-CyFair President Dr. Audre Levy as the guest speaker.
These student leaders, who are also involved in the college’s Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Student Ambassador Program, not only heard Dr. Levy’s speech regarding the state of the college, but gained insight into how business leaders and other chamber members interact and the importance of networking, said Villanueva, LSC-CyFair’s Director of Enrollment Management.
“I had a blast learning about how the chamber works with business leaders to expand opportunities and provide an outlet for the industry,” said Pescador, a S.O.A.R Leader and student ambassador.
“I have never had an opportunity to meet real business leaders who were really impressive, said Herrera, a student and part-time employee. “Attending the luncheon gave me a greater appreciation for our local chamber of commerce and encouraged me to get involve.”
Students sat with Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Board of Trustees Bob Covey, Tom Jackson and Darcy Mingoia, who said it was wonderful to see the students asking questions and interacting with business people over lunch.
“The students didn't realize that business people work hard to create interest in their businesses,” said Mingoia, LSC Foundation Executive Director. “Business people have to develop leads all the time!”
