Dr. Monica Perales, associate professor of history and assistant director and graduate program coordinator for the University of Houston Center for Public History, will make a special presentation at Lone Star College-North Harris on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at noon in the Student Services Building Conference Center, located at 2700 W.W. Thorne Drive in Houston.

In Dr. Perales' presentation, “How I Met My Grandmother: Using Family Stories to Uncover Community History," she will discuss researching and writing her recent book, Smeltertown: Making and Remembering a Southwest Border Community. In part a family history, Smeltertown features her grandmother's photographs, interviews with family and friends, and other historical records. Together, they place her grandmother's story of immigration, Americanization, community, and neighborhood women's activism in its historical context. This exciting personal story demonstrates the value of family history as an approach to understanding the past. This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

“Dr. Perales is a rising star in Chicano labor and social history, as well as an engaging speaker,” said Dr. James Good, chair of the college’s Department of Social Sciences. “We are delighted that Dr. Perales has agreed to speak at LSC-North Harris for this Lyceum event."
