Animated by their devotion to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Lone Star College-Montgomery’s “VI Corps Fifes and Drums” directed by Dr. Craig Livingston, professor of history at the college, was awarded the Most Patriotic Entry in the South County 4th of July parade, held July 4, 2013, in The Woodlands.
“The moment we arrived at Market Street was sublime,” said Livingston. “The huge silk VI Corps flag waved to our front; the drums crashed their introduction; and the fifes struck up ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic.’ The sensation of thousands of people rising to cheer and clap was a sacred moment.”

The VI Corps Fifes and Drums participants, musicians, and support team in the parade included community residents Phil Arias, Ray Cox, and John Rossi; Dan Ciufo, ROTC instructor at The Woodlands High School; Katherine Freeman, a graduate from LSC-Montgomery; and LSC-Montgomery students Zach Davis, Kanaan Windham, Kelsey Fore, Matthew Barnard, Blake Childers, Fernando Romo (flag carrier), Fitzroy Graham II (banner carrier), and Maria-Angel Winter (banner carrier). When not donning Civil War uniforms, the group is known by their Revolutionary War title, “Lord Stirling’s Fifes and Drums.”
The recognition, which came with a trophy and a $250 cash prize, was a monumental ending to a year-long anniversary celebration of campus and community-wide efforts events led by Livingston and the Civil War Commission. Events included Civil War-themed lectures, movie and camp dinners nights, an essay contest, and a live battle march reenactment held on campus.
