HOUSTON (Nov. 21, 2012) – Lone Star College System will be celebrating the dedication of the Lone Star College-University Park Campus on Thursday, Dec. 6.
During a visit to LSC-University Park earlier this year, state Sen. Dan Patrick called the collaboration between LSCS and its partners at LSC-University Park “one of the greatest opportunities for students in Texas and in the nation,” Patrick said.
“I get excited when I see real innovation at work,” he said.
The public is encouraged to attend the event to help LSCS celebrate this historic dedication. Guided tours of the 1.2 million square-foot multi-purpose college campus will be given as part of the event.
The dedication will take place from 2-4 p.m. on the campus located on 20515 State Highway 249 (SH 249 and Louetta) in the West Dining area of the Commons. Refreshments will be provided.
College leaders and numerous elected officials are expected to attend. LSCS speakers at the dedication include LSCS Board of Trustees Chair Randy Bates, J.D.; Dr. Richard Carpenter, chancellor of LSCS; Shah Ardalan, president of LSC-University Park; Dr. Daria Willis, faculty senate president; and Haley Barnett, student government association president at LSC-University Park.
In 2007, community leaders approached LSCS requesting that a new university center be established in the northwest Harris County area. In 2009, LSCS had the opportunity to purchase the property that was once Compaq Computer’s world headquarters from HP and created LSC-University Park. LSC-UP offered its first classes in 2010 as a satellite campus of LSC-Tomball.
Approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states, LSC-University Park is now LSCS’s sixth comprehensive college enrolling more than 5,500 credit students.
“LSC-University Park is recognized as a leading model for the ’innovative college’ of the 21st century,” said Ardalan. “The college has received national recognition for its pioneering initiatives, while attracting, retaining and inspiring students locally and from all over the world.”
