Great minds have come together to make Lone Star College-Montgomery’s chapter of Psi Beta, the national psychology honor society for community colleges, a laudable recipient for the 2011-12 Psi Beta Chapter Excellence Award.
This distinct honor was given to only 10 of the 114 active chapters nationwide.
“Our Psi Beta members have worked hard and for many hours to achieve this award,” said Dr. Karen Buckman, professor of psychology at LSC-Montgomery and Psi Beta advisor. “Students who are interested in psychological issues enjoy working together and sponsoring programs and activities. It’s a great group of students, and they’re very deserving of this honor.”
Psi Beta Honor Society promotes professional development of psychology students through promotion of excellence in leadership, scholarship, community service, and research. Membership is based on G.P.A. (3.0 or higher); completion of at least one psychology course; and an interest in psychology.
Buckman, along with fellow Psi Beta advisor Mike Green, professor of psychology at LSC-Montgomery, was instrumental in helping charter the college’s Psi Beta chapter in 2008. Since then, 80 members have been inducted into the chapter, with 22 of those students inducted this past spring.
Psi Beta members participate in numerous community outreach events, including the March of Dimes campus walk, pet food drives for The Friendship Center; and can food drives/sculptures for the Montgomery County Food Bank. Additionally, the students work closely with LSC-Montgomery’s Psychology Club.
