Build Your Portfolio: College Forms New Stock Pickers Club For Students

Get in on the ground floor of Lone Star College-Montgomery’s latest investment—the Stock Pickers Club, a student organization that meets every other Friday beginning March 2, at 2 p.m., in the Commons Building (Building A), Room 230.

The Stock Pickers Club will discuss the basics of how to open a broker account to buy and sell stocks; how to sniff out a potential Apple Corporation (AAPL); and how to become part of the stock market action. Potential guest speakers, Wall Street-related movies, and lively discussion will also be a part of the meetings.

“It will be a fun, informative, and hopefully, a potentially profitable time for all,” said Gary Brown, professor of political science at LSC-Montgomery and club sponsor.

Brown cited information from a CNBC article to explain why students should consider attending.

“Many students bring $3-$4 cups of Starbucks coffee to class each day,” explained Brown. “Had their parents bought them a first birthday gift of 100 shares of Starbucks (SBUX) stock at the initial public offering price of $17 per share in June of 1992, that investment would be worth $150,000 today. With that kind of money, students could get a college degree without loans, put down 20 percent on their first home, buy that fancy car, use some as capital to start a business, and still have enough money left to take your family out to dinner.

Brown also plans to share his interest in the stock market and his own investment experiences at the meetings

“H.J.Heinz (HNZ) is a quality company with good earning reports and solid dividend,” said Brown. “My sons like to drown their food in Heinz ketchup, so I bought 100 shares as part of my individual retirement account (IRA). Imagine my joy when HNZ beat the Wall Street quarterly earnings estimate last week, gaining $2.37 per share. It’s these sorts of things that we’ll be talking about each meeting.
