Presented in observance of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, a staged reading of “The Guys” will be held at Lone Star College-CyFair Sept. 11 and Sept. 12.
Based on a true story, “The Guys” is a courageous, often funny, riveting play that deals with the horror of 9/11 with an intimacy that is both unsettling and healing.
Less than two weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them, an editor named Joan, receives an unexpected phone call from Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. Nick needs a writer to help him with the eulogies he will present at the memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon recalling the fallen men by recounting their virtues and foibles and fashioning the stories into poignant tributes. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief, they draw upon humor, pathos and the enduring bonds of humanity.
Featuring Ron Jones, LSC-CyFair theatre director, and Daria James, there will be two free performances of this encore production first presented at LSC-CyFair in 2003.
The first performance, with a reception to follow, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 in the Main Stage Theatre, in the Center for the Arts building at 9191 Barker Cypress. The second limited-seating performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 at the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department Station # 11, located at 18134 West Road (next to LSC-CyFair.)
LSC-CyFair’s Science and Public Services Division is co-hosting these performances and Firehouse Subs is catering the reception.
