Interested in an opportunity to gain leadership skills, enhance your marketability and earn $400 a semester? Apply now to be a Student Outreach and Retention (S.O.A.R.) leader at Lone Star College-CyFair.
Our S.O.A.R. leaders support both the Outreach and Retention and Student Activities departments in reaching out to all prospective students for the college, helping new students adjust to our campus and returning students stay engaged, said Director of Outreach and Retention Christine Timmerman. S.O.A.R. is an outstanding opportunity to have a meaningful position that helps make a difference for students and the college
S.O.A.R. leaders participate in a variety of orientations, all tours for the college and campus events. They serve as mentors, peer advisors and student representatives on campus committees. In addition, they assist College Connection Advisors with special programs at area high schools.
Michelle Ortiz and Juan Lerma, 2010-2011 S.O.A.R. leaders, described their experience in S.O.A. R. as positive and amazing. Ortiz said it helped her overcome her shyness and I learned how to speak, act and dress more professionally.
Some benefits I have gained are leadership, time management and communication skills, said Lerma. I have also gained great friends and networks.
Flexibility in event participation, a leadership workshop series, resume enhancement for future marketability and $400 scholarship per semester are additional benefits of being a S.O.A.R. leader.
Among the participation requirements are:
Current students in good academic and disciplinary standing
Minimum 2.50 grade point average
Completed at least 12 credit hours by the end of the Fall 2011 semester
