Lone Star College-Montgomery wants to help you get into tip-top shape this spring at the 14th annual communitywide wellness expo and job fair event known as “Healthier U”.
Set to take place Wednesday, April 6, through Friday, April 8, this long-running event aims to promote healthier living in the community while generating much-needed scholarship funds for students primarily in the nursing, medical radiologic technology, physical therapist assistant, fire science technology, and emergency medical services.
“Last year’s event raised close to $30,000, breaking the event's fundraising record,” said Mary Rush, division operations manager and Healthier U coordinator. “We were fortunate enough to provide close to $15,000 in scholarships for students, as well as fund a second $1,000 Healthier U Endowed Scholarship to be awarded annually in perpetuity.”
The 2011 event line-up begins on Wednesday, April 6, with a heart-healthy cook-off and sweets bake-off, a gently used multimedia sale, and a silent auction. The multimedia sale and silent auction continue through Thursday, April 7.
Healthier U continues Thursday, April 7, when the wellness expo and job fair take place. The wellness expo includes informal presentations, demonstrations, and exhibits by campus and community organizations.
At noon on Thursday, an awards ceremony will be held to recognize the Healthier U scholarship recipients for 2010, as well as the Platinum- and Gold-level sponsors.
The event concludes on Friday, April 8, with a golf tournament held at River Plantation Country Club.
With the exception of the golf tournament, most activities take place on campus, in and around the Commons Building (Building A), from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. All events are open to the community.
“There truly is something for everyone at this event,” said Rush. “The college and community sponsors have really come together for this event with hopes to have yet another record-setting year!”
Although space is limited, there is still time to add your business to the sponsor list and participate in Healthier U.
